Lipedema and fatigue
WHY MANY FEMALE PATIENTS SUFFER FROM EXHAUSTION
Many women with lipedema report not only pain, tenderness, and swelling, but also another distressing symptom: persistent fatigue and exhaustion. This form of exhaustion is often underestimated, yet it can severely impact daily life. But why do so many people with lipedema feel so tired?
In this article, we explain possible causes of fatigue in lipedema and which factors may play a role.
Fatigue in lipedema: A common but little-known symptom
Many patients report symptoms such as:
- severe fatigue in everyday life
- Rapid exhaustion during physical activity
- a persistent feeling of lack of energy
- Difficulty concentrating
These symptoms are often compared to the so-called fatigue syndrome, a persistent form of physical and mental exhaustion.
Although a direct link between lipedema and fatigue has not yet been conclusively proven scientifically, studies and clinical experience show that several bodily processes can promote fatigue in lipedema.
Hormonal influences in lipedema
Hormones play an important role in the development of lipedema. In particular, the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone are suspected of influencing the growth and distribution of fatty tissue.
A hormonal imbalance can not only...
Lipedema symptoms are exacerbated, but also:
- influence energy levels
- change the metabolism
- Fatigue and exhaustion promote
In addition, some patients with lipedema also report accompanying thyroid problems, which can also lead to fatigue.
Chronic inflammation in the tissue
In lipedema, chronic inflammatory processes can occur in the fatty tissue. The increased accumulation of fat cells and fluid retention places a constant strain on the tissue.
The body reacts to this by activating the immune system. This releases pro-inflammatory messenger substances – so-called cytokines. These are closely related to:
- fatigue
- exhaustion
- general feeling of illness
Chronic inflammation can therefore be an important factor in the fatigue-like symptoms of lipedema.
Impaired lymph flow and fluid retention
Another possible cause of fatigue is impaired lymphatic flow.
The lymphatic system's function is to remove excess fluid and metabolic waste products from the tissues. However, this process can be impaired in lipedema.
The consequences can be:
- Fluid retention in the tissue
- Swelling in legs or arms
- a feeling of heaviness and exhaustion
If fluids and waste products are not adequately removed, this can put additional strain on the body and contribute to physical fatigue.
Reduced blood flow and energy production
Fluid retention and changes in the tissue can also lead to reduced blood flow.
Poorer blood circulation means that:
- less oxygen
- fewer nutrients
to be transported to the cells.
This can reduce energy production in the body, which in turn can manifest as fatigue and lack of motivation.
Can lipedema treatment improve fatigue?
Many patients report that their fatigue has significantly improved after successful lipedema treatment.
Possible positive effects of therapy include:
- less pain
- improved mobility
- less swelling
- more physical activity in everyday life
This can also improve the overall energy level.
Lipedema and fatigue: A complex interplay
In summary, fatigue in lipedema is likely caused by several factors simultaneously. These include, among others:
- hormonal changes
- chronic inflammatory processes
- a disturbed lymph flow
- reduced blood flow in the tissue
Even though not all connections have been fully clarified scientifically, the experiences of many patients show that exhaustion can be a relevant accompanying symptom of lipedema.
Early diagnosis and individually tailored treatment can help to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life.
