Your lipedema surgery is tax deductible!

If your liposuction is medically necessary and not covered by your health insurance, you can claim the costs as an extraordinary expense on your tax return. According to the Federal Fiscal Court, liposuction for the treatment of lipedema has been a recognized medical procedure since 2016—a medical report from a public health officer is no longer required.

Which costs can you deduct?

  • Doctor's fees and clinic fees
  • Pre- and post-operative examinations, e.g., lymphatic drainage
  • Medicines, compression stockings, bandages
  • Travel costs for treatments

Tip: Keep all receipts and invoices safe. Even small amounts can add up – every euro counts!

Until when can I claim this?

You can file your tax return retroactively for up to four years. For example, if your surgery was performed in 2021, you have until the end of 2025.

Still unsure?

A tax advisor or a tax assistance association can help you with questions about deductibility.
