Why summer can worsen symptoms

Many women with lipedema are familiar with this phenomenon: While the cooler months often bring some relief, pain, feelings of tightness, and swelling increase significantly in the summer. High temperatures can exacerbate lipedema symptoms and considerably impact daily life. But why does the body react so sensitively to heat – and what can those affected do about it?

Why does lipedema worsen in the heat?

On hot days, the body tries to release excess heat. To do this, the blood vessels in the skin dilate to increase blood flow and regulate body temperature.

This dilation of blood vessels allows more fluid to leak from the blood vessels into the surrounding tissue. In healthy individuals, this fluid is usually easily reabsorbed. However, in lipedema, the tissue is already altered and reacts much more sensitively.

The pathologically increased fatty tissue in lipedema is chronically inflamed and often exhibits heightened sensitivity to pressure and pain. Even small additional fluid accumulations can therefore lead to the following symptoms in affected individuals:

  • experience more severe pain,
  • develop a pronounced feeling of heaviness in the arms or legs,
  • Perceiving increased feelings of tension,
  • become tired more quickly
  • and have the feeling that the legs or arms are “swelling”.

Many patients report that they are significantly less resilient, especially on hot days, and that their usual clothing fits more tightly than usual.

Why compression therapy is particularly important in summer

Especially when temperatures rise, many sufferers forgo their compression garments because they find them uncomfortable or too warm.

From a medical perspective, compression is particularly important during the summer months. It supports the removal of fluid from the tissue and can help reduce swelling and feelings of tightness.

Regular exercise, walks, swimming or aqua fitness can also help to activate the muscle pump and promote fluid removal.

Tips for hot summer days

The following measures can help to alleviate discomfort caused by heat:

  • Drink enough fluids
  • Incorporate regular exercise
  • Elevate your legs or arms occasionally
  • Use cooling showers or Kneipp treatments
  • Avoid direct sunlight if possible.
  • Wear compression garments consistently
  • Wear loose and breathable clothing.

Even though these measures can often improve the symptoms, they do not eliminate the cause of lipedema.

Can liposuction help?

Liposuction is the only treatment that specifically removes pathologically altered fatty tissue. By reducing this tissue, pain, pressure sensitivity, and feelings of heaviness can be significantly improved in the long term.

Many patients report that after successful liposuction, they can experience summer more actively again. Walks, travel, sports activities, or wearing shorts and skirts are often associated with a renewed sense of well-being and self-confidence.

Another advantage: The effectiveness of liposuction is not dependent on the season. The treatment can generally be performed year-round. Therefore, those who feel particularly restricted by symptoms in the summer do not have to wait until autumn or winter to seek advice.

Enjoy summer despite lipedema

Heat can significantly worsen the symptoms of lipedema. Swelling, pressure pain, and the feeling of heavy legs or arms are an additional burden for many sufferers, especially during the summer months.

However, it's important to know: you are not alone with these symptoms. With the right conservative treatment, consistent compression therapy, or ideally liposuction, there are ways to sustainably improve your quality of life.

Because summer should not be defined by pain and limitations, but by joy of life, exercise and the good feeling of being comfortable in one's own body again.
